![]() ![]() * Ford: Despite being a Ford fan, I’m not too familiar with what they sold. It was phased out in the early 70s when the Australian Valiant got bigger in size. ![]() Once the Australian Valiant was on stream, I the Dodge Phoenix was the sole (I think) remaining RHD CKD Chrysler model assembled and sold. * Chrysler:CKD RHD Plymouths and Dodges sold here through the 50s – although only the front clip differed – eg my grandparents bought a ’59 Plymouth Belvedere here new the ’59 Dodges shared the Plymouth body and rear end. They shared the same dashboard regardless of brand. * GM: In the 1960s, the CKD RHD models sold here were Chev Impalas/Caprice and Pontiac Parisienne/Laurentian. For example, all our NZ-new RHD 1957 Chevs still wore the 1956 dashboard – so the first time I saw a LHD USA ’57 Chev here I was mightily confused! * Although the exteriors were generally updated in line with the USA models (although usually a year behind), the interiors often weren’t updated, and would remain unchanged for some time. * Generally the GM/Ford CKD kits came from Canada (probably because Canada and NZ were both in the Commonwealth so got cheaper trade rates or something). Of course they differed more and more from their American cousins as the 1960s rolled on – and by the early 1970s they were uniquely Australian designed and built. The only exceptions are the Falcons and Valiants that were built in Australia from 19, respectively. I believe the same is true for Australia too. I wonder if anyone has any experience in converting your classic to disc brakes? I found a kit on Summit Racing that i think will work for my 1959, but wanted to ask you all if i have the right one or what the right one might be.Bryce is correct for NZ, our American cars were RHD CKD kits until they faded from the market in the early 1970s. So i want to convert to disc brakes and when i shop for the kits its very confusing since i've never done this before. I have a 1936 Ford with mechanical brakes and frankly I feel very little difference. The drum brakes slow you down but the quick stopping power is just not there. The pedal still moves only an inch from the floorboard and if i really need to apply pressure it feels like I'm bottoming out on the floorboard. After completely overhauling the drum brakes, master cylinder and of course all necessary adjustments I'm still not satisfied with the braking power. I'm want to convert my TBird from drum brakes to disc brakes. So my question is how involved and expensive is it to convert to disc brakes? Can i do it with 14" wheels? Anything else I need to know or consider making the conversion? Should i even make the conversion? Your advice or recommendations is much appreciated. I'm trying to determine if this is normal for hydraulic brakes and i just don't remember that or not. But after all that my pedal still goes to within an inch of the floorboard. The reason I'm considering it is because i just replaced my master cylinder, all the wheel cylinders and of course adjusted and bled the brakes. I am considering making a change to disc brakes but had a few questions. So i hope I'm not asking anything previously posted. I went through old forum posts and could not find any conversation about converting from hydraulic brakes to disc brakes. ![]()
